The lion is a large mammal of the Felidae family. The lion’s body is healthy. Some large male lions weigh over 250kg. They live in grasslands. During the day it sleeps and they come out of their caves at night for hunting. Relatively small females are fast runners. Normally lions can reach speeds up to 50mph, but only in short bursts and can leap 36 feet.

Lions are the second largest cats in the world. They are very social animals and live as a group called pride. These pride of lions hunt together and specially hunt the heard animals. There are about 30 lions in a group, including 3 males, dozens of females and their young. A lion’s average life span is 20-25 years in captivity and 15-20 years in the wild.

Lions have been celebrated throughout the history for their courage and strength. And they are also common symbols of royalty. And it also known as “the king of the jungle”. Ancient Egyptians venerated lions in their wars because of the lions’ strength, power and fierceness. The lion is a magnificent animal that appears as a symbol of power. Also courage and nobility of family crests. Many civilizations use the figure of lion in their national flags. Including our country. In Africa, India and Arabia lions are found. But today only a very small population of lions remain in India.

According to IUCN several different types of lions are in danger of becoming extinct for a variety of reasons. Because many of the habitats where lions live are being destroyed due to increases in human population and much of the prey that they depend on for food is disappearing.
